Some of that effect is a tactic, Eng evoking Maugham’s subdued style in understated revelations of secret lives, and the writing is graceful and well-researched. Still, the novel at times labors to capture the passions that consume its characters’ lives.

In 1921, Somerset Maugham and his partner Gerald Haxton traveled throughout Asia, which included a sojourn in Penang. Maugham gathered personal stories from people he met in Malaya that would inspire his fictional work, The Casuarina Tree, a collection of six stories published in 1926. In “P&O”, a Mrs Hamlyn is on a ship back home to the UK after having left her husband because he had fallen in love with another woman. The story is about her encounters on the ship and how she learns to forgive. Another story, “The Letter”, centers around a woman who shoots and kills her neighbor while her husband is away. She claims it’s in self-defense after the neighbor tried to rape her.

It was quite frightening because you know, when you submit your first draft to your agent, you want them to come back to you the next morning and say, "I spent the whole night reading the draft and I loved it." In contrast, I found writing the fictional characters, Leslie and her husband, more liberating, easier to write, more fun to write as well. I wonder if this was a difficult book for you to write because of the constraints you couldn't completely make up everything 'cause you are writing about a real person. Robert Hamlyn, suffering from the disabling effects of chemical warfare from the First World War, is pressuring his wife, much to her dismay, to move to South Africa where he believes the less humid climate will allow his wounds to heal. Earlier, Lesley told Maugham about her affair with Arthur, a member of Sun Yat-sen's Chinese revolutionary party, when he was in Malaysia to raise funds for the campaign. Lesley felt justified in engaging in the invigorating affair with her true love after learning of her own husband's infidelity. And Lesley also tells Maugham of her friend Ethel Proudlock, who was tried for murder in 1911 after killing a man who she claimed had tried to rape her.
What is so intriguing about this situation is that we somehow accept Lesley's version as what really happened, though in fact Tan has borrowed names and details from Maugham's work to seed The House of Doors and his heroine's stories. In doing so, Tan has pulled off not just a captivating novel, but an ingenious twist that explores how literature works its magic. To her consternation, he wants them to move to his brother's sheep farm in South Africa in the hopes of improving his health in a less humid climate. The visit, intended as an opportunity for the famous author to rest after physically taxing travels around Asia — and to further avoid his wife in London, whom he never should have married — turns out to be less relaxing than he'd hoped.
